CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Research
Language is very important in our lives, because it is always used in our daily activity to communicate with the others. We can’t communicate each other without language, because it is one of the communication tools used by people in general. We can use language to convey our messages or to express our ideas through oral, written, or signal languages.
There are some more countries that used the kind of languages in this world including English. One of the countries is Indonesia that has been our beloved country. It has Indonesian language and the other countries do too.
Although there are many kind of languages in this world, all of the people from over the world can communicate each other by using English because it is an international language used among them to communicate. It is identic with the Janet Holmes state in his book by saying:” A world language or international language is English language. It was used by people such as in economic,
political and also education.”3 In Indonesia, English as the foreign language that was taught in every
school from the elementary to the university level. The study of foreign language as the main lesson for the students who learn their first foreign language. They study it by mastering the four basic languages namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The first is mastering listening skill. Students listen to every sound in the environment. The second is mastering speaking skill. In this step, they try to practice what they listen. The third is mastering reading skill. Usually they start learning this skill when they study in kinder garden or elementary school. The fourth skill is mastering writing skill. Those are four language skills which should be started by people when they study language.

Speaking is a crucial part of the foreign language learning and teaching, because it can be used for the student to express their ideas orally in foreign language. Without speaking skill they will just keep silent. In order to speak well, they must practice their skill in everyday live. Therefore, the teacher should give students opportunity to practice their speaking skill by giving some more
example or activities that put them into the real practice communication.
In English lesson there are many text types which is should learn by students. One of them is procedure text. According to Oxford Learner Pocket Dictionary, procedure is usual or proper way of doing something. When we talked about procedure we also talked about process, because procedure is process of doing something. We also have taught about procedure in islamic
teaching, for example the process or procedure of making human. It was explained in the holy Qur’an surah Al-Mu’minun: 12-154
?And indeed We create man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and
earth).Thereafter We made him ( the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah
(mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in
safe lodging (womb of the women). Then We made the nutfah into a clot
( a piece oof thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little
lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then
We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brougt it forth as another
creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators. After that, surely you
will die”.

The explanation of versus above is actually We take the oath that We created human, that is kind of human that you witnessed, started from extract of clay that is from ground. Then, We made the extract become nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) then We safe it in womb of women. Then We created nutfah become alaqah, after that We created
alaqah became mudhghoh that is a clot ( a piece off thick coagulated blood), then We made it into a little lump of flesh, then We made of out that little lump flesh with flesh bones, then we clothed the bones with flesh, then we gave a life and we made a creature that different with other creature. So, Allah is the best creator. After that, its mean after thoughing that processes and processes in the
earth strated from baby, child, tenageer, adult and old, you will die.5 From the explanation above, we can see that there are many steps before human is created.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of Study
It is based on the fact that language learning is influenced by some factor, like motivation, and reinforcement. A teacher should be careful in observing the students understanding of the material in teaching learning process. One way to make better image in teaching learning process is a good method. One thing that should not be forgotten the tendency of linguistic posessed more by left
hemisphere of brain than the right one. We have known that the function of left hemisphere of our brain is only for right hand control, science and technology ability of Conversation, thinking, written language, and memory, otherwise, right hemisphere of brain has functions for left hand control, awareness of music, imagination, art awereness, perception and three dimensions.1 Convensional
method more focuses its attention on use of left hemisphere than right hemisphere of our brain we have to balance both hemispheres. In fact, we also have to solve this problem. The writer conducts this study to find new way of balancing use of th left hemisphere and right one.
Experts believe that learning process by using music build a new pathway in the brain and give more than just a causal relationship to the development of certain parts of the brain in the long term. Music stimulates a greater connection than can be provided by any other stimulus to the left hemisphere of the brain with the right ones and between the areas in the brain responsible for emotion and memory. Using music as a medium to maximize human ability will be a significant effort because music is able to motivate and encourage participation in activities which will help to achieve the goals in the social functions, language, and motorist.
Furthermore, Sari said that the brain will work optimally when both hemispheres are used together. This can be seen if children only learn by using the left hemisphere which has a function cultivate about science, business and education while the right brain is not activated which should have the function of thinking, feeling, imagining, and creating. As well, they are just using the right brain without balanced with the utilization of the left brain, he might be a lot of singing, talking, or drawing, but only a little knowledge can get into his brain. One way to combine left and right hemisphere functions is by using music when the students understand easily the lesson.2
One of measurements of teaching learning process success is the participation of student in teaching learning process. However, the success up to now is still difficult to achieve. It is because of the lack of appropriate media in learning process. In this research, the writer focuses on using music in that music can improve students’ motivations when teaching learning run. It also happens at
SDN 01 Manggungsari Weleri Kendal. Based on initial observations of English teaching learning process which run especially cardinal and ordinal number materials in fifth grade, it showed that teaching learning process was still teacher- centered; meanwhile, students were only passive in joining the lesson.
Monotonous situation caused students bored and ignore the lesson. To make the students motivated and enjoyable to learn, the teacher should use interesting teaching methods, as Jeremy Harmer said that teacher’s method in teaching could be intrinsic motivation which motivates the students to learn.
3 Therefore, it is important for teachers to gain some knowledge. Harmer’s statement is supported by Hadits Anas bin Malik about happy and enjoyable learning:
"Narrated Anas bin Malik: The propet Muhammad SAW said: Facilitate
things to people (concerning religious matters), and do not make it hard for them
and give them good tidings and do not make them run away. 5

That hadits explains that the learning process should be made easy and fun so that students are not pressured by psychologist and do not feel bored in the classroom situation, as well as what is being taught by their teacher. A learning should also use appropriate methods adapted to the circumstances, especially considering the circumstances of people who will learn. In addition, music
performance is used to motivate students and create a more relaxing.
That is why the writer uses music performance to teach English cardinal and ordinal number. It is also based on the fact that learning styles are divided into four kinds. Namely :

1. Kinesthetic Style
This style usually called hyperactive character. Because the character
easy in memorizing teaching learning material by using body movement.
2. Auditory Learners
Auditory is something that is related with sound and most of us learning
with sound and most of us learn with soul that we hear and listen everyday.
Like growing infant, the first step they learn to speak is by listening to mothers
voice.
3. Visual Learner
Is a simbol learner. It means that this style is easy to memorize
somethimg representated in sybol, picture, map, diagram, or area condition as a
visual medium. This character thinks based on object, concrete thing.

INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Teaching and learning activity in writing need some skills for the students to master. Writing is the difficult skill in language because in writing the students must generate and organize their ideas to solve the difficulties in writing. The difficulty of writing includes spelling, punctuation, word choices, and so on. It must be the higher level skills if the students’ language proficiency is not weak. This is one of the difficulties in writing as well.
Beside that, in writing skills become highly complex. The students must plan and organize as well as possible for the spelling, word choice and punctuation to make a good writing.1 Whereas the ability or skills to write well is a close relationship to academic and professional success. It is stated by Grabowski (1996). He states that:
“Writing, as compared to speaking, can be seen as a more standardized system which must be acquired through special intruction. Mastery of this standard system is an important prerequisite of cultural and educational participation and the maintenance of one’s rights and duties. . . The fact that writing is more standardized than speaking allows for a higher degree of sanctions when people
deviate from that standard.” (Grabowski,1996:75)2
Writing allows the students to share their communication with the contemporaries and future generation. Writing is considered as student failures to get success in learning process. Even the teacher uses the writing as punishment for students. However the students must learn the proper
spelling and grammar in order that they can make a good writing. So they aren’t considered as poor students in English writing.3

Then, the students will be able to write a good writing if the teacher give some approaches to them. There are three approaches to writing. The first approach is products of writing through texts examination, discourse structure, and surface elements. The second approach focuses on the writer
and process concluding expressivist, cognitivist, and situated strands. And the third approach is how the writer engages with the audience or students in creating coherent texts.4
After the students are able to be creative in writing and they have approaches in writing, the teacher must have style in teaching writing especially in recount text. Mary Lynn Crow notes that:
“In the main, a person’s values, beliefs, and philosophy can easily be ascertained by the way he or she teaches.
The instructional strategies and techniques that are adopted by a teacher bespeak his attitudes about himself, his students, and their respective roles in the teaching and learning process.”
In this case, the style in teaching is important for the teacher. But it is difficult to have the elements of styles. To understand the teaching style, the teachers use the basis and must examine themselves because it is systematic manner. They must know the personal qualities and behaviors. So it can
affect the students to learn the ability especially in writing.5
In understanding recount text, the students also encounters problem in implementing the structure of recount text. The students feel confused to differenciate it such as orientation, events, and reorientation. The are also still confused how to make or write recount text correctly.6 In order to
understand a good recount text, they can learn some examples of recount text types such as newspaper reports, conversations, speeches, television interviews, eyewitness accounts, and letters.7

ABSTRAK

Traditionally, assessment is held at the conclusion of a unit of study. Certain grade is used to decide the understanding degree of the students to the subject. Traditional assessment includes multiple-choice questions and asking students to respond the questions with short answers.
Portfolio assessment is a purposeful collection of student work that tells the story of the student’s effort, progress, or achievement in given areas. Portfolio can be viewed as a systematic and organized collection of evidence used by the teacher and student to monitor the growth of student’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a specific content area. The indicators of portfolio assessment are daily test result, structured tasks, anecdotal record, and report of the student’s activity out of school.
The purposes of this research are to describe the student’s learning achievement with traditional assessment and portfolio assessment, and then find out the difference between the student’s learning achievement with traditional assessment and portfolio assessment.
The design of this research is ex post facto. The population is the 1st class of students of SMP 4 Jambi.  In selecting the sample is used clustered random sampling. The students of class 1A and 1B of SMP 4 Jambi are chosen as the sample. The data collection is done by observation and collecting the documentation. T-test is used to analysis the difference between the students’ learning achievement with traditional assessment and portfolio assessment (contoh Skripsi Bahasa Inggris)
Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that mean of the class with traditional assessment is 60.00 and mean of the class with portfolio assessment is 70.31. By using t-test at the level of significance (a) 0.05, is got tratio is bigger than ttable, that is tratio = 2.833  > ttable = 1.992, it shows that there is a significant difference between the students’ learning achievement with traditional assessment and portfolio assessment.
It can be concluded that the student learning achievement with portfolio assessment is better than the student learning achievement with traditional assessment at the level of believe 95%. But portfolio assessment is better implemented in small class because teacher will be easier in managing the class.
